So, I want to brag about my kids for just a minute. I have been a nurse for 17 years and, because of my training, I am always aware of people around me. Recently, I helped an elderly gentleman in a restaurant who was struggling to stand, I offer to help when I see people in the community who are having difficulty walking, or when someone needs help carrying their groceries at the store. My kids, I’ve realized, have been paying attention. Whenever they see someone that they think needs help, they ask me, “Can we help them?” and I am so proud.
Kimberly Day, owner of Greater Love Caregivers on Cape Cod, recently asked her daughter, “What is something you learned from watching me help people?” She replied, “God gave us a healthy working body to help people that don’t have that. God loves us and we love others.”
Helping people is the most important lesson your kids are learning from parents who are healthcare workers. When kids see healthcare worker parents act with care and compassion, it leaves an imprint on their lives. Kids also learn empathy from healthcare worker parents. When kids see their parents ask a friend or a neighbor “How are you feeling?” they learn to step out of their own little world for a minute and show true empathy.
So, healthcare workers, how can we influence our kids? Let them see you care.
